If the timing is off, they can collide. Interference engines&nbsp;are more common in modern vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In non-interference engine&nbsp;designs the pistons and valves won\u2019t ever make contact with each other \u2013 no matter what happens with the timing belt. This design was more common in the past &#8211; when engines used lower compression ratios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the day, if a <a href=\"https:\/\/gmb.net\/product-category\/tensioner-idler-bearing\/5759\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timing belt<\/a> snapped on a non-interference engine, the customer got a tow and a new belt. No harm, no foul. Those days are over. The non-interference design was a luxury of low-compression engines. Today, in the hunt for more power, efficiency, and lower emissions, everything has changed. When that <a href=\"https:\/\/gmb.net\/product-category\/tensioner-idler-bearing\/5759\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timing belt<\/a> breaks, the camshafts stop <em>instantly<\/em>. But the rotating assembly&nbsp;&#8211; the crank and pistons&nbsp;&#8211; doesn&#8217;t, due to inertia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interference engine, that means the pistons are going to <em>smash<\/em> into the valves that are stuck open. It\u2019s a guaranteed, catastrophic failure.&nbsp;It&#8217;s not&nbsp;a simple fix;&nbsp;there will be bent valves, broken pistons, and a trashed cylinder head. This is a time and&nbsp;labor-intensive job.
